Renovated Historic Building
The historic Manitou Spa Building was considered to be a masterpiece of engineering at the time of its construction in 1920. In 2007 it underwent a multi-million dollar renovation by award-winning builder and historic preservation experts Murphy Constructors of Colorado Springs.

History

The Manitou Spa Building was built in 1920 by the Manitou Springs Bath House Company, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Construction was supervised by Major John Fordyce of Little Rock, Arkansas, who was hired because of his previous experience in building bath houses. W. C. Maurice of Hot Springs, Arkansas, who was considered to be the foremost expert in bath house construction in the country, was hired to assist. The building cost $350,000 to build, and when it opened for business on August 4, 1920 was considered to be a masterpiece of engineering.

The building shares some architectural features with the five-star Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, including its polished Italian marble floor in the rotunda and its Italian tile roof.

See here for a photo of the building as it appeared in the 1920's. Other old photos of unknown age are available here.
